It’s a fair criticism, but I don’t pretend this is a full review; it only addresses 1 point:When I was in a hunting mode, a close friend told me his first criterion in evaluating a new date as a potential wife:-after he opened her car door (yeah, I know, corny. But in those days it was expected of a ‘gentleman’, no matter how much of a lowlife he was!), he observed whether she leaned over to open unlock his door, from the inside, so he didn’t have to use his key (I know,I know, what’s a key?) If she opened it, things moved on to the next step as she may become a ‘keeper.’ If not, in his view, it reflected a lack of thoughtfulness and concern for his side of things, and was a fatal flaw. (Of course he never told me what any of his dates’ criteria was, but since he was unattached for a long, long time….Please keep this little parable in mind as you read my way too long review…and consider the customer evaluating Acer’s attitudes.1. (A SMALL ITEM WHICH IS BIG ISSUE TO ME) : Someone who buys a 7′, rather than 10′, tab clearly holds size/portability as very important. TAken together with the very short (shortest on the market?) battery life, it means one of two things:a) Ideally, there would be a user replaceable (spare)battery setup…but if this is impossible due to the internal design/size constraints, then,b) one must take the charger along – esp for travel. Doesn’t work well to have your tavel/flight sked on your tab, and be looking at a dead screen. Or contacts. Or spreadsheets. Or docs. Or photos of the many, many, many women who have shot you down (requires 32Gb supplemental card if solely low rez pics), when you told them you still lived with your parents, borrowed their car, didn’t work, but had an allowance and generated some extra income from selling blood, wanted to go Dutch, but not averse to having them pick up (all) the tabs over $3, didn’t shower- or launder your cloths – more than monthly ‘to be ecologically responsible’, never heard of dental floss, and, at 35, spent most of your time playing Angry Bird with your (only) friend.THE A100’s PROVIDED CHARGER MAY BE THE LARGEST BRICK I HAVE SEEN, FOR SUCH A TINY OUTPUT, IN YEARS! It is, literally, 75% of an original eqpt 30watt charger I use for one of my laptops!THERE IS SIMPLY NO JUSTIFICATION FOR THIS. Acer clearly saves a few cents of production costs, and inventory carrying costs (by not having to produce, and stock, various models with specialized prongs for counties around the world) costs by having a single power brick with interchangeable prongs to be used for different outlets around the world.) That’s not rocket science.Good for them. BUT, bad for the customers. I’ve got charger bricks for other products I use, some purchased YEARS AND YEARS AGO (like an antique Moto sliver) that are less than 1/2 the size…AND have folding prongs to make it even more convenient to slip into any kind of bag, purse, even pocket if need be.THIS IS REALLY UNACCEPTABLE, AND DEMONSTRATES A CLEAR PRIORITY FOR ACER’S 25 CENTS/UNIT INVENTORY COST SAVINGS OVER ITS CUSTOMERS’ PRIMARY REASON FOR BUYING A 7′ UNIT IN THE FIRST PLACE – ESP ONE WITH THE SHORTEST BATTERY LIFE ON THE MARKET – To come out with the first tab using 3.2, and all the other attractive features, and then cheap out on the charger (assuming all eyes will be on the sizzle and flash, and not on the mere charger) is a triumph of the bean-counters over the engineers and marketing staff, and for sure the customers. Even the 5 year old, small, streamlined Moto USB folding-prong phone chargers could easily work with the right barrel plug. However, one should not have to be a home hobbyist burning his hands and lap with his clumsy handling of a soldering iron, or worse, mini blowtorch (well doc, I was home trying to adapt my smallo power brick to this neat new tablet, and then it slipped, and…) in order to travel – across the world or across town.I don’t want to harp on this (actually, yes I do, and will), but it is akin to buying a pair of small, ugly folding eyeglasses (as a backup emergency pair for travel) and finding they ONLY come in a case as large as conventional glasses. Or larger.-It places an unreasonable limitation on the user who bought the unit, and accepted it’s battery limitations in the first place, never expecting a power brick the size of a watermelon, with fixed prongs sticking out like a porcupine on steroids, to not only make it bulkier, but also assure it catches on clothing, and other items in whatever container. (And, if you have never had a porcupine in your pocket, let me tell you it is one nasty experience. Specially in the middle seat of a NY-LA flight between two of America’s Biggest Losers (before, not after, the weight loss) encapsulating you you to the point of total frozen immobility- with a porcupine in your back pocket – and unable to either get any water or get to the john, or worse, GETTING the water early in the flight, all the while with the porcupine making you curse the day Mr. Stan Acer made that decision…SO EASY FOR ACER TO HAVE SOLVED AT THE FRONT END. SUCH A HASSLE FOR THEIR TENS OF THOUSANDS OF FUTURE CUSTOMERS TO SOLVE INDIVIDUALLY – ONE JURY-RIGGED SOLUTION AT A TIME – OR TOLERATE – SO ACER CAN SAVE A NICKEL.I can only hope the rest of their design choices reflect a greater concern for their customers.ARE YOU LISTENING ACER???Maybe I’ll have some other observations after I turn it on!!!!Read more 14 people found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abuseHeath3.0 out of 5 starsgood, not greatSeptember 5, 2011Size: 8 GBI actually bought this back at the end of August at a certain big box retailer who just got it in stock. First off, I have to say I am a big android fan, I love my droid incredible and I really wanted a 7 inch tablet, but the galaxy tab just didn’t do if for me so when I heard about the acer A100 I kept waiting and waiting for this thing to come out.I kept hearing about all of the delays mainly due to the issue with Honeycomb and how it would not display right on the 7 inch tab. So the day this thing was in the ad, I snapped it up and played with it for about a week and then…I returned it. Lots of little reasons why but mainly it’s because I just don’t think as a tablet software that android is mature enough yet. That and a lot of apps crashing, things that shouldn’t crash like the Kindle app.For the money this thing costs, I want it to work and work right. Don’t get me wrong there is a lot to love about this tablet, but for me the cons outweighed the pros.Pros: – nice size, you can fit it in your jacket or for the ladies, their purse. – Android Honeycomb 3.2 operating system (it looks beautiful and works well) – widgets – strong Google integration with other services, mail, calendar, contacts, photos, etc. – flash supportCons: – the 7 inch screen size is not good for web viewing with out lots of scrolling and or/ zooming in. (it gets old after a while) – Honeycomb 3.2 yes I listed this as a pro, but it’s also a con because so many apps just don’t work without crashing or finding old versions, etc. And with Ice Cream Sandwich due out by Google here very soon I don’t see a lot of app makers fixing issues until then. – flash support – yea, flash is great and all but man, does it kill the battery. I was watching superman on Amazon prime (I can do that with android unlike Apple), however I watched my battery go from 95% to 70% in about 30 mintues of use. It just drains the battery and I did this test multiple times with the same result.- Battery life is dismal. I never got more than about 5 hours of use, 5 hours!?! Acer really cheaped out on the battery.- viewing angles are very limited. Unless you are looking right at the screen forget about anyone else looking at it as well, not going to happen- limited app selections for tablets. (More of an android issue, but hey, it’s an android tablet) No Netflix or other major streaming options is a killer limitation and when I had the tablet, there was no work around for netflix that was working for the A100In the end I could not justify keeping it, I really wanted to like this tablet, I really did, in fact I kept trying to tell myself that the negatives were not that big of a deal, but when I really started looking at the cost and the apps crashing or just not working, I began to like it less and less. For the kind of money tablets cost, I want them to work, I don’t want to have to go searching of multiple forums to try and figure out why an app is crashing or how to ‘hack’ it to get it to work.If it was a hundred less, I might think it’s worth the issues, but not at the price point it is and now that amazon is coming out with their own tablet, I think I may wait just a little longer and see what that may bring.Read more 50 people found this helpful Helpful Comment Report abuseSee all 284 reviewsWrite a customer review Pages with related products.
